Every Troubadour Goods product I’ve tried has been near-perfection, and the Troubadour Rig Case 2.0 was an eye-opening product for me to see. It nails “tech case” on the head, with bits of thoughtful flair that only the Troubadour team could ever imagine.
In this review, learn about the features of this tech bag that set it apart, as I delve into the fine details and how they work out when I pack my tech.
For travel, I think you’ll find that the Rig Case 2.0 is a soon-to-be essential companion for all your “valuable stuff” and accessories. Here’s my experience with this product in the review that follows.
Troubadour Rig Case 2.0: Summary
- It’s a tech bag made of vegan leather, with top-notch zippers and Troubadour signature design. All the materials are vegan.
- It’s innovative: it stands up on its own, so I can have it sit upright on a table at a meeting on a business trip. It also can survive being compressed in luggage.
- Some of the standout features for me are the relative high volume (4 liters), hidden magnets for closure (to add an extra level of chic) and multiple ways to organize in the interior with mesh pockets and zippered pouches.
Quick list of pros and cons
I expect a lot from Troubadour, as you may have seen at my Troubadour brand review. Here are the highs and lows of the Rig Case 2.0.
Pros
- Cool double-zipper opening for a full view of everything inside.
- Lots of dividers, mesh pockets and ways to organize cables and small items inside.
- Helpful grab handle for whisking it out of my suitcase, or carrying it from a meeting when I also have my laptop in my hands.
- Refuses to crease: thanks to the vegan leather build, it can be squashed in a backpack and come out looking great.
- Sits upright on a table no matter what’s inside.
Cons
- I have very few complaints about this product, in all honesty.
- One might note that it only comes in one color: Black, and if you wanted it to match something Navy or Gray, there is currently no color choice for that.
Let’s get right into the details.
Best features
The Rig Case 2.0 has a ton of great things for me to discuss. I’m going to pick a few of the most memorable highlights that make this tech case up a notch from others I own.
Double zipper closure
I have tech cases from here to there, and some open up clamshell-wise, and some are more like envelopes or sleeves. The Rig Case is boxy, and Troubadour designed the best-case-scenario opening style for it: double zipper for what they call an “at-a-glance view of your gear.”
The zippers glide gracefully, as do Troubadour zippers in most products I’ve tried from the brand. At the end of the opening flap, there’s a nice magnet that keeps it neat and closed up. It’s very satisfying to use.
Capacity
Troubadour says the Rig Case 2.0 is their largest tech case ever, with a 4-liter volume. That’s big! It’s bigger than my Aer tech case, and my Peak Design Tech Pouch, which has half the volume capacity. Somehow, the Rig Case 2.0 fits a ton of my tech stuff.
As you can see in these photos, I’m able to fit a mouse, my memory card case, chargers, wall plugs, a small notebook, rolled-up cables, ear buds, a phone, a pen AND an external battery in my Rig Case.
Sits up right (stands up on its own)
Some tech bags are designed to just lay on the table. Not the Rig Case 2.0: It’s meant to work hard and sit up right on a surface, so that it’s not falling over and looking sloppy while you’re at the dealmaking table.
Doesn’t crease
Somehow, the vegan leather on the outside doesn’t crease if I put the Rig Case in my backpack, smush it and take it back out again. It still looks neat and business-ready after being compressed in luggage during a flight.
Grab handle
Like I mentioned above, the grab handle is actually a nice feature, and it performs well. I have other tech cases that only have a keyring-sized loop for carry or attaching it to the interiors of bags; but the handle on the Rig Case 2.0 is for my entire hand.
The best use case for this is for walking in and out of a meeting when I also have my laptop and maybe a notebook in hand. It’s also useful for grabbing the entire case by its handle when I pull it out of my suitcase or daypack, rather than fumbling to grab it by the width of its sides.
Attractive and sustainable
Troubadour makes products that are “good-looking” and sustainably made, at the same time. It’s one of the reasons we’re glad to continue trying products from Troubadour.
Troubadour is a B-Corp brand, which means sustainability is an integral factor of how they operate and manufacture. In the Rig Case 2.0, the materials are recycled polyester and vegan leather, and the exterior is waterproof.
Comes with a dust bag
Becca is very protective of all our Troubadour products, so the fact that we have a dust bag in which to keep the Rig Case when it’s not in use is very helpful.
She has high hopes for keeping everything in our Troubadour collection very pristine.
Worth the investment?
Every Troubadour product makes me breathe a sigh of relief: that’s because the company makes travel products that basically outdo the competition.
The zippers always slide beautifully, the designs are aesthetically pleasing (and also turn heads) and the quality is outstanding. This is true for products as small as the Ki Backpack to the Orbis Duffle.
At the current price for the Rig Case 2.0, it’s not much more than you’d pay for other brands, like the tech pouches I’ve reviewed in my list of the best tech bags for travel.
Where to buy it
I recommend getting all Troubadour products from the Troubadour website directly.
That’s because your purchase needs the Five-Year Troubadour warranty: I say this because with Becca’s first Troubadour backpack, it had some parts sewn on incorrectly when it arrived. She reached out to Troubadour’s customer service and they sent a new backpack in just a few days with no problem.
